  • GPO dns client override win xp

i have about 20 workstations that cannot query the domain controller.

there was an OLD GPO that set the dns client to point to specific servers:
    192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3

now the same domain is running on 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3

these machines can no longer contact the domain controller, to get the updated GPO's

There does not seem to be a way to override the GPO for this DNSclient either.

how can i killoff this dns gpo without rebuild?
once i've disabled it, of course it will connect to the domain and grab the appropriate settings.

    Static IP?

Or possibly set up additional IP addresses on one of your old DCs for 0.2 and 0.3

based on your comment i could install a 2nd nic in the server and leave it on the legacy subnet... but im attempting to do this remotely .... so thats a last resort.

any way to override or killoff a DNSCLIENT domain-gpo entry?

No, dont add a second NiC, just a second address to the existing one

          solution:

          new network: 192.168.1.X
          old network: 192.168.0.X

          steps:

          1) add second IP to server in the old subnet range, (same IP client pc is requesting) Then reboot.

          2) fresh boot client machine and login as admin. add a second IP. Reboot.

          3) login as admin on client. gpo's should synchronize.

          4) once sync'd, remove second ip from client pc and reboot again.

          5) should be fixed.

** If using RDP, from a cmd prompt run this command before adding the IP:
          C:\ shutdown -r -t 120

(Once you add the second IP you will lose connectivity and you want the machine to reboot, so you dont get stuck.)

            Well done!

And it could probably be all rolled into a script somehow
