  • Stop changing wallpaper

    Hi all

We have a GP in place that stops users from right clicking on the desktop and going to properties. But if they have a picture in their file space and change the windows view to thumbnails, they can right click on it and click set as background.

Ive looked in group policy and cant find anywhere that turns this off.... anyone else found it????

    Many thanks

    Re: Stop changing wallpaper

    Hi
i found this (orig source http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro...ep/gpfeat.mspx
    )

In the Group Policy Object Editor, under User Configuration and Administrative Templates, click Control Panel, and then click Display.

On the details pane, double-click the Prevent changing wallpaper policy, and then click Enabled. Click OK to continue.

Click File, and then click Exit to close the Group Policy Object Editor.

      Re: Stop changing wallpaper

Many thanks for the 'Dummies guide to GP' but it is no help. We have that setting set but when students right click on an image in their workspace they can click set as wallpaper (or background or whatever) and TADA it changes!

      Any other ideas?

EDIT: in fact if you read the explain bit about this setting it says:

Prevents users from adding or changing the background design of the desktop.

By default, users can use the Desktop tab of Display in Control Panel to add a background design (wallpaper) to their desktop.

If you enable this setting, the Desktop tab still appears, but all options on the tab are disabled.

To remove the Desktop tab, use the "Hide Desktop tab" setting.

To specify wallpaper for a group, use the "Active Desktop Wallpaper" setting.

Also, see the "Allow only bitmapped wallpaper" setting.

So it just greys the options out. Anyone tried the Active Desktop wallpaper setting? Does this stop the ability to change?

        Re: Stop changing wallpaper

After a quick test the Set Wallpaper option in the Active Desktop area seems to stop the changing of the wallpaper. Im happy again!!

            Tonyyeb,

I would like to ask if "mandatory user profile" an option for you? In my experience, I'd rather not use GP to control appearance, it's easier with profile. What do you think?

P.S: I did use GP to control appearance but when conflict occurred, it was hard to troubleshoot.

            Regards,

              Hi Azmantek

We use a combination of Mandatory profiles and GP to control users and appearance. The mandatory profile just stops any changes that are made being copied back they dont stop them making the change in the first place.

              Thanks

                Re: Stop changing wallpaper

Hmmm active desktop stops users changing the desktop but also adds an AWFUL shadow onto the icons! I dislike that more than users changing the desktop! Any one got any better suggestions?

                  Re: Stop changing wallpaper

I might be onto something. If i deny change permission to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop then i cant change my desktop. But this information is lost when i log off so It looks like i have two options:

                  1. Make the change in the logon script each time

                  ..or..

                  2. Find out where the information about the permissions is copied from and change it there....

Anyone know where number 2 is? (Please refrain from any puns! Thanks!)

Have you tried (or already have in place) to configure the registry key permissions via GPO ?
