  • Enable/Disable Services by GPO

    Hi Friends,
I'm here working on a domain environment with WinSvr 2008 R2 as PDC and WinSvr 2003 as ADC, The ADC is configured as WSUS server to keep my clients updated.

Issue : In order to get my clients updated i've to enable the "Automatic Updates" and "Backgroud Intelligent Transfer Service" so now i've to go to each and every client and enable these services manually.

All I need now is to Enable these services using GPO from the Server End.

    Waiting for your Reply/Suggestion ......

    IGNORE : better Method above.

Use a script to run the net start command?

Alittle simple, and I am sure there is a better way to do it (ESP, as win7 does not like domain logon scripts), but that should work.

    Code:

    Net start BITS
    Net start wuauserv
Make a GPO to run those commands at user logon.

How about creating a suitable GPO and then (in GPME):
      Computer Configuration--Policies--Windows Settings--System Services

Set startup to Automatic and define appropriate permissions

        Re: Enable/Disable Services by GPO

How have you stopped them in the first place?
The Windows update and BITS services are started by default . Startup type is automatic and manual respectively (Assuming XP)
BITS service is one of those that starts up on demand.

How to configure both services with a GPO is shown here,
