  • Favorites and Links not applied

    Hi, folks

I have configured the Default Domain Policy on my W2k3 domain so that a new folder named HTL is added to the Favourites folder. I have created several URL's within the HTL folder:

All computers are listed in a single OU - Computers. There is one other policy at the same level - a software installation policy that installs Adobe Reader on all the clients when they first join the domain.

For some reason the GPO is not being applied.

I have tried running gpupdate /force which requested a reboot. I have rebooted twice since then but the HTL folder is still not appearing in the Favorites folder. The clients are WinXP Pro SP3. I have SpecOps installed on the DC and tried running GPUpdate from there without success.

I rarely tinker with Group Policy, so can anyone tell me where I am going wrong please?

    Thanks!

Keep in mind that you're configuring user settings here, not computer settings.

What do rsop.msc and gpresult on the clients show? Does gpupdate /force on a client help?

Hi, thanks a lot for your reply.

Looking through the results of gpresult I see that the policy was applied from restored and Titan. Restored is our 'secondary' domain controller and exists purely for redundancy. I've just checked the default domain policy on Restored and it matches the policy on Titan (the 'primary' domain controller), the HTL folder exists there too.

I had already tried gpudate /force but it did not help.

Hi, REMS, thanks for the help.

I tried that. After setting it I tried gpupdate /force again, and restarted, but still no luck.

I've installed I.E.8 on my machine and will be installing it on the servers tonight. Will that make any difference, do you think? I report back tomorrow anyway.

              Cheers!

                Sorry for the late reply.

                This is still not working.

None of the clients or domain controllers are showing an HTL sub-folder in favourites.

Does anyone else have any suggestions please?

                Thanks

Re: Favorites and Links not applied

While not a fix, if it's urgent that you get this change out, a workaround may be to use the Shortcuts GP Preference, if you're able to use that.

This is not urgent so I am quite happy to ride it out for as long as it takes. I'm not familiar with Shortcuts GP Preference, so I'll look into that and see if it leads me anywhere.

                    Cheers!

Good to know that you're keen to see this through and work out the problems

The Shortcuts preference has a mode to allow you to create .URL shortcuts - all I'll say is that you do have to jump through some hoops to get it to work though. God forbid you should ever want to create a shortcut to a path with a space in it...

                        Thanks

Unfortunately, after looking at Group Policy Preferences, although the CSE's can be installed on Win XP SP2 upwards, the management component can only be run from Vista SP1 and W2k8, neither of which are installed on our network.

However, it is useful, as I hope to get an additional server in the next 6 months and can install it on that.

                        Cheers!

Google "Optimum X" and download Shortcut.exe - I used this for 'normal' shortcuts before we were able to use GP Preferences, but I believe it may be able to do URLs too.

Hi, Gareth, thanks again for your continued help with this.

That is a very useful utility. It looks like .url files can be created, but a bit of jiggery-pokery is required. The most illuminating statement about that I could find was that a series of echo commands need to be used, but no example was given.

As this is not urgent I'll just go back to it when I have some free time. Eventually, I hope to discover the reason why this is not working and then find the solution.

If I do, I will post back.

                            Cheers!
