  • Change Local Administrators

I am looking for a way to change the local Administrators on a computer via GPO.

I want to remove a group that is currently in the Administrators group on all of the PCs in our organization. Further more, I want to add a new group in it's place.

We have a Server 2003 functional level and have a mix of XP and Windows 2000 clients.

Is this possible? If not by GPO, is there another method?

    Re: Change Local Administrators

    Hi,

Use the following, save it as a batch file and use it as a stratup script in a GPO:

    Code:
    net localgroup Administrators "Domain\oldgroup" /Delete
    net localgroup Administrators "Domain\newgroup" /Add
The other way would be through Restricted Group policiy setting in GP.

You can do this via Restricted Groups.

Google also brings up some good articles.

This is a GPO setting that will remove existing groups and add in the groups you want.

Thanks for both of the responses.

In the above startup script, do users need to be admins on their computers to process this?

No, since it is a computer startup script and applies to computer objects and will execute when the computer starts.
