  • Internet Explorer 8 installation via group policy

    Good day All,
I found that IE8 installation exist only in exe format. I can not use it with group policy as group policy requires .msi or .zap format. Is IE 8 installation available in .msi format? or is any one know any other method for installation without user interaction ( I am looking for free method as we can not buy SMS server for just one software installation.

Make the exe into an msi file with something like WinstallLE.

I believe it will publish IE8. That mean Users then have to install it from control pannel. I need to install this application without users interaction

If you make it into an msi file you can then deploy it using GPO.

If you create an install package with IEAK in the FULL-dir there is a msi file.

I tried using the IEK to do this and while it looked like it installed when a client computer was turned on, some of the machines gave no notification that it failed and now IE8 doesnt work ... You click on the icon and it just created a shortcut. is there any way to fix this and automate the process .. we have about 85% of our computers in the school district that now have this issue.. only a small handfull worked!

Due very soon, apparently. Microsoft usually have a delay between a major upgrade appearing on Windows Update and on WSUS.

I couldn't get group policy to work. I used IEK and created an MSI but only about 20% of the mahcines installed properly.. the others gave no notification that the install failed and there are no logs on the machine for IE8 intall but IE no longer runs on the mahcines.. just click the icon and you get a shortcut. I would like to know if someone else has this issue and knows an automated way to resolved???

I've learned not to hold my breath - MVPs on the newsgroups had previously been promising it'd be on WSUS in June

I can confirm it's there. However I had to manually import it from the updates catalog.
