  • GPO to allow users to defrag and change power settings on laptops

    Evening All,

We currently have a requirement to take away administrator permissions from users. However, these users need to be able to defrag their laptops periodically and change power settings on their laptops.

I have found the user right Perform volume maintenance tasks can be enabled for a specific group, but it doesn't seem to be working. I added myself to this group (not being a local administrator) and each time I attempt to run a defrag it informs me I have no permissions.

Also, without giving the user local admin or power user permissions, what it the best way to all them to change their power settings?

I hope someone can help out there !

Many thanks and have a great evening

    Shaun

This is put out by EnergyStar, the US Energy Dept. consumer site.

      http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?...t.pr_pm_ez_gpo

Follow the instructions in the download and create a GPO with a SW install and Computer Settings.

Power settings in GPO don't work well, and many are not available without an executable like this.

I have this on about 35 individual domains, with different settings based on users, computers or a combo with no issues.
