What kind of software did your test user manage to install?

Re: gpo to disallow user software installation

Are you interested in not allowing your users to download things? Or even run specific applications?

Re: gpo to disallow user software installation

            Hello Yaniv,

If the XP OS is installed on NTFS formatted drive the default security prevents ordinary users to install new software.
There are exceptions. Some small programs, like Irfan viewer can be also installed for the current user only. If you are not an administrator or power user, the software setup create an installation folder (where you have proper right) and all registry settings like file association and shortcuts are created only for you.

I performed some tests. When I tried to install Irfan V. for all users, the setup returned me an error message.

More over, Irf.V. can run without any installation. Just double click on the i_view32.exe.

It is almost impossilble to stop using such software. If it is a big issue for you, try implementing a proper Software restriction policy.

thank you for the answer and the test's.

i did not know if there is a GPO setting that prevents the installation.
