  • Security Groups and Group Policy

Hello, I'm very new to AD and have just setup a test environment. I am having extreme difficulty getting a group policy to apply to a sercurity group.
    Here's what I have setup:
1 security group with 1 user as a member.
1 OU with the security group as a member.
I'm using the group policy management snapin.
I created a group policy with several restrictions.
I have this policy linked to the OU.
Under the security filtering area I also have the policy only applying to the security group.

After 2 days of searching this seems to be all I need to do however when I login to a computer in the domain none of the group policy restrictions are in place.
One last thing is that I have no problem gettting the policy to work if I apply the user directly to the OU and in the filtering area. It's just when I try it with a group the same user is a member of....

I'm sure it's something simple but what I have no idea.

    Hi jbird.
What you're describing is a common misconception.

Group Policy only applies to Users and Computers, not Security Groups.

Group Policy filtering is used when you don't want all the users and/or computers in an OU to receive the GPO settings.

Thanks for the reply. I guess that explains why I had no trouble getting the GPO to apply to a single user. It just seems like the the next logical step would be to apply a GPO to a group.
No big deal. It just changes the way I need to set things up.

      Thanks again
