  • Dns error prevent domain join

    Hi all

I have a network that was previously working ok

I am now getting the error " the following occured attempting to join the domain abc.local

An attempt to resolve the dns name of the controller in the domain being joined has failed........

I have searched the internet but all of the solutions are what I already have in place.

    * The DC is also the dns server and it points to itself for dns resolution.
    * Clients get the dns ip from dhcp.
    * nslookup on the client shows the ip address of the dns/dc as expected.
    * the soa and name server have the dc/dns server listed.
    * clients can ping the dc/dns server by hostname

    Anyone have a suggestion?

    Thanks for reading

Re: Dns error prevent domain join

It could be there's old records in DNS. When you run nslookup and query abc.local (not server.abc.local) what IP addresses are returned? Are they all of active DC's and are the IP addresses reachable? Look through the _msdcs and the other subfolders in the DNS console and make sure those records don't contain references to DCs that are no longer available.

Re: Dns error prevent domain join

Actually sorted this one I set the dns zone name to mirror that of the domain name and it worked!

so abc.local domain I deleted the current dns zone within it

I created a dns zone also called abc.local

From what I had remembered the zone name didnt have to be the same as the domain but on this occasion did cure it!

      Thanks

        Glad you got it fixed.

Where did you do this? On the DNS server? Or do you mean something else besides "DNS Zone"?
