  • Joining pc to Domain takes a long time

    Hello everyone.

I am new in the forum and just started doing my MS Certification.
I have build a home server and running into some issues that i thought i would ask help from here.

    Below are the scenario
    **
I have one Server 08 R2 In Workgroup -192.168.1.2 (this server is running HYPER-V only) this is connected to a ADSL router- 192.168.1.1 (router DHCP is off ).
    I also have 3 Virtual Server 08R2
1 server is running AD,DNS & DHCP role - (have created forward & reverse look up zones), - 192.168.1.3 = this is my primary DNS which is the servers own IP and this is where the AD global catalogue is installed also.
    2nd server is running Exchange -192.168.1.4 &
3rd server is running File server role 192.168.1.5
    ***
Workgroup server is connected to ADSL modem 192.168.1.1
A WIfi Router (192.168.1.20) is connected to ADSL modem also ( DHCP off ) all the 3 virtual machine connected to this wifi router + switch

I also have 2 Windows 7 machine Plan is that this 2 machine will get their ip from DHCP ( domain controller ) and I want to use them using the WIFI router connection.
All the 3 servers are in the same subnet as you can see,

When I created the virtual Exchange server and File server and joined them with the Domain controller (192.168.1.3) it only took 2 seconds to join them.

But the laptops, when I tried to connect them to the domain using a Cat5 cable from the WIFI router, took a significant 10 minutes to join and after joining when I try to log in to the laptop using a domain account over wifi or wired, it takes about 10 minutes to log in.
My understand is that my laptops are having some problem resolving the domain controller name? in the laptop NIC, I have mentioned my primary dns is 192.168.1.3 and enabled netbios over tcp/ip

Nslookup from server & pc gives me same result also but can provide more info if required..

Possible to shed some light please?

thank you very much for taking the time to read and give your valuable thought.

Can you confirm the virtual servers are not on a private or internal hyperv network?

Re: Joining pc to Domain takes a long time

No, the Virtual Servers arent in a private network.
The hyper-v is in Workgroup, ip - 192.168.1.2 Which is connected to ADSL modem (without DHCP) - 192.168.1.1
In the Hyper-v (192.168.1.2)- 3 Virtual machines created (1 dc+1exc+1filesrv) all in the same subnet.

I did find that my dns forwarders only had my ISP's dns package details so i have also added my DNS hosting companies details in the DNS forwarders.

I dont think its got anything to do with Viruses.. lol

Re: Joining pc to Domain takes a long time

Can you ping the DC from the laptop by FQDN as well as NetBIOS name?

Can you confirm if the laptops have actually succeeded in joining the domain or not?
Can you put in static IP/DNS details on a laptop and see if that changes things?

You said the ADSL modem has DHCP off
Can you confirm the WiFi router also has DHCP off, also do either of them have any options to put in a DNS server

As a guess, the client is looking elsewhere for DNS and failing, before coming to the DC (where it should be in the first place)

Re: Joining pc to Domain takes a long time

                        Hi Ossain,
thanks for reply. thats exactly correct, My guess is also the same, the client pcs arent finding the first DNS server.
I can ping DC & any other virtual machine from the Laptop itself and ping response is good,
the ADSL modem which is also a WIFI modem definately has DHCP off
and the 2nd WIFI modem/switch also have DNS off and in the management page i couldn't find a input where i cud put the DNS server details.

Yesterday i have joined the workgroup server ( that hosts the Hyper-v role) into the domain and then logged into the laptop using the domain account - this has reduced the login time almost half but still noticeably slow, but this defeats the purpose of having a workgroup server so i can remote in easily from external location rather then setting up VPN.

I wonder if its got anything to do with the way i set up the virtual NICS?

when creating the virtual server i have allocated each virtual Nic with a physicall Nic so they have their individual connection.
another way of doing it would be creating a Virtial switch and have all the virtual Nic connected to a virtual Switch and bridge the Virtual switch with a physical NIC, but this may slow down the communication traffic if i am not wrong?

                        ****
                        ***
Can you ping the DC from the laptop by FQDN as well as NetBIOS name = I think i could, will test tonite and post result.
Can you confirm if the laptops have actually succeeded in joining the domain or not? - Yes it has joined domain cuz i can see pc name in computers Ou in AD and can see the exchange and file server using the UNI path.
Can you put in static IP/DNS details on a laptop and see if that changes things? - Haven't tested this yet.

You said the ADSL modem has DHCP off - Yes
Can you confirm the WiFi router also has DHCP off, also do either of them have any options to put in a DNS server - Yes DHCP is off in this router also but pretty sure there is no DNS server option. but will double check again, if there was it would be perfect solution

Troubleshooting issue was talking more time then i thought
so i scraped the whole thing and started from scratch..
this time lucky, only have a host machine in Workgroup and a Domain controller in Hyper-v so far and joining pc to domain took about 2 seconds and logging on takes about 2 seconds as well.

What i did do this time is..

created a external network + internal network using hyper v network manager so the Virtual machines can talk to outside and inside other virtual machines..

keep you guys posted about the exchange...

thank you for trying to help ossain.
