  • dns config advise needed.

    Hi all

I have a multi homed DC with 3 nics connected to 3 subnets. The server is also a DNS server replicates over activedirectory.

I am planning to disable 2 nics and keep 1 cause of dns issues.

this mean i will only have dns on 1 subnet and my windows servers have 2 nics connected to diffrent subnet each nic. Is it not wise to have 1 nic configged without dns and the ontherone with dns?

    Thanks

The optimal design should be the DC/DNS server with only 1 NIC enabled. The only reason for having a server with more than one NIC enabled is because clients are on a subnet that are unable to get packets routed to the single NIC server.

If you are referring to the DNS client settings for the DNS server, you should point it to itself, even if you have more than one NIC enabled.

I am referring to the servers in the domain that have 2 nics on 2 diffrent subnets. If I run dns on 1 subnet and I have a server that haves 2 nics.

This means one of the nics will not have dns server adress settings.

      Is this bad?

The DNS Client settings are not required to have a DNS server on the same subnet. So, you can add the DNS server settings to the other NIC if needed even if the DNS server is not on the same subnet.

Not sure why you have server(s) with two NICs. Do you have a network design that has segments that are unreachable due to limitations in routing?

I have a design where certain network traffic over gows over nic1 instead of nic2.

Ok, you could use the same DNS settings on both NICs. That will not introduce any additional issues.
