  • 2008 domain name question

    Hi,
when installing first DC in 2008 environment below the fiels for doman name there is an example: corp.microsoft.com

    My question:
why the recommendation is not ".local" anymore?

    Thanks,
    Michael.

Probably mostly because .local is used by the ZeroConf protocol.

My recommendation would be to use .internal

      Joe,
I completely accept your recomendation but is there some reason for showing as an example real stuff - .com .org .net
There were pluses and minuses for hiding them. But MORE pluses.
      What is the reason?

If I'm understanding your question correctly, you're asking why it's not considered good practice to use "real" domain suffixes like .com, .net, etc. internally, right?

If so, it's mostly due to concerns about maintaining and managing split-brain (split-horizon) DNS, maintaining a logical and technical separation of your private and public domain namespace, issues of security, etc.

Although you can easily do something like internal.domain.com as your internal namespace.

            Re: 2008 domain name question

I wanted to ask why in Microsoft Server 2008 example domain suffix is ".com" and not ".local", that was best practice for 2003 domain.

                So I shut up ...

I started this discussion because in 2003 ".local" was recommendation I belive...
I will deploy new 2003 domain to double check.

Why deploy a new Domain to check something that may or may not have been a recommendation over 6 years ago. Things change and besides, it is only a name for internal use. I prefer to use .lan because it has only 3 charactors to type (I hate typing). You could use .baldpatch if you wanted and no, I am not attaching a photo to this post. The laser like glare could kill you.
