  • Dynamic DNS registrations

    Hi, new to this forum.

Problem with XP PC's when located on certain subnets.
The A record doesn't update and a reverse lookup zone for the site is not created. The same PC works fine at a different site.

    Any ideas? Thanks

    Re: Dynamic DNS registrations

A little more info needed, Are the clients responsible for Dynamic updates or is the DHCP server (Assuming you use one) configured to do that?
How are Dynamic updates configured for the DNS zone?

Reverse lookup zones aren't created automatically. You need to manually create one for each subnet\site.

        Re: Dynamic DNS registrations

DNS updates for the zone are configured as "secure only".
To my understanding, this means that clients will register:
        1) via DHCP server (if using DHCP)
        2) or static addressed clients will register themselves (if they run W2KSP4 and above).

        This site uses static addresses.

I'm sure that reverse lookup zones have appeared in DNS dynamically in the past...

          Re: Dynamic DNS registrations

The secure only configuration is valid if you have AD integrated environment. If your XP pc is not in the domain then the authentication while registering its A record with the DNS server fails. Check out if you have reverse lookup zone manually configured as it does not create automatically by itself.

Also, when you're issuing nslookup in the xp pc does it show you the DNS server ip & name?

            Re: Dynamic DNS registrations

Thanks for the response. The PC's are members of the Active Directory Domain. Our AD Zones are AD Integrated.

I dont think I explained the "Dynamic registration" of the Reverse lookup properley.
We have manually created the Reverse lookup zone for our whole subnet (eg. 10.x.x.x) The dynamic registrations were appearing for the class B and C subnets contained within this subnet range (10.23.x.x and 10.24.1.x, etc). But they dont for the problem site.

NSlookup connects straight to the correct DNS server and does lookups with no trouble...

              Re: Dynamic DNS registrations

It is not clear if you are using a DHCP server or not. Can you clarify.

Also on the affected client can you try IPconfig /registerdns and check the events.
Also try to change the zone configuration temporary to allow Nonsecure updates and see what happens.
Also any events on the server.

                Re: Dynamic DNS registrations

This is a site with no DHCP server. But other sites with no DHCP server work fine.
Will try the zone settings with non secure set.

                IPCONFIG /REGISTERDNS returns

The system failed to register host (A) resource records (RRs) for network adapter
                with settings:

                Adapter Name : xxx
                Host Name : xxx
                Primary Domain Suffix : xxx
                DNS server list :
                xxx
Sent update to server : <?>
                IP Address(es) :
                xxx

The reason the system could not register these RRs was because either (a) the DNS server does not support the DNS dynamic update protocol, or (b) the authoritative zone for the specified DNS domain name does not accept dynamic updates.

To register the DNS host (A) resource records using the specific DNS domain name and IP addresses for this adapter, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator.
