  • Implementation of Microsoft DHCP serivce

Currently we have a system of ~4000 which is spread across multiple locations appro. its around 10 different locations. As of now we are still using the static IP address for all the systems and now we need to migrate to DHCP service. Can someone help in giving the detailed implementation strategy or document or plan i.e. how to migrate from static to dynamic considering min risk & also downtime.

    thanks in adv....

Setup a DHCP server on each site that needs one. I would be setting one up on each site.

Use the same scope as you currently are using

Set all clients to obtain IP address automatically. This can be done via scripting and GPO's, if it were me i'd do it on a log off script so that when users log off it sets the NIC to get an address automatically on next boot thus no downtime.

    Have a look here

Can I suggest you get your network administrator to set it up, and guide you through the process for your future information

In all seriousness if you cannot manage to setup a DHCP server and implement scopes then i think you should pass this onto a consultant or other professional that can.

DHCP setup is very simple and easy but to start with what OS are you planning on using???

Microsoft has its own version of a DHCP server, as does linux and unix, and setup is as simple as going into Add Remove Programs or what ever it is in later OS's and adding the service via the netowrking option.

Then its a case of configuring your scopes.

Now i'm not going to look about any more as there is a fabulous resource out there called Google. Learn how to use it correctly and your questions will be answered.
