  • Reg : DHCP Offer

    As i am a beginner,
have the following query, kindly help me to resolve.
If 2 DHCP servers in a network, which server's IP will received by clients. Any priority on assigning IP.

    Eg:
A printer is configured to get IP from DHCP servers (2 dhcp server), which DHCP server will offer IP to Printer

Basically it comes down to the first to respond
(Assuming both are on the same subnet)

      yep, which ever responds first.

      DHCP basically works like this:

Client boots, sends out a "discover" broadcast packet
Server hears it, and sends back an "Offer" broadcast packet, containing an address
Clietn sends back "Request" broadcast packet, requesting the offered addrses
Server sends back "Acknowledge" broadcast packet. Client configures the address/

The DHCP process can be defined as D.O.R.A (as in the dinosaur :P)

In the interest of helping you learn, I'll rep point you if you can tell me why it uses broadcast
