  • setting u new dhcp server acrros vlans

    Dear All,

    I have the below setup

6502 Core switch consisting of MSFC and Giga fibre modules
and a 48 port 100 mbps utp switch

10 cisco 2950 switches each on separate vlan
    vlan 10 to vlan 19
usng right now static Ips and working fine

Now recently I have installed on my windows 2003 AD server a DHCP role on
the server and created 2 scopes for testing one having ips for vlan10 and the other having ips of vlan11 The server is in vlan 10 and vlan 10 is 172.16.10.x network
respectively vlan11 is 172.16.11.x network and so on for other vlans

to start with I have on my DHCP server a scope defined for 172.16.10.x
network and also for 172.16.11.x network but see that the clients in vlan
10 gets IPs for DHCP server but the clients in VLAN 11 do not

on the MSFC I have for ip helper address of the dhcp server for vlan 11

I was googling ar but yielded no much help

I really would apprecite your help as to where and what could be done

    Regards

Not sure what MSFC is but did you configured your IP helper address correctly?

Ah ok, I'm not very familiar with the 6500 series. I just know they are big, make quite a lot of noise and you have modules you can plugin to
Do you have an interface for VLAN 11 with an IP for VLAN 11 defined? I assume you did, but just checking..

Re: setting u new dhcp server acrros vlans

          thanks once again ,

Yes I do have an Ip assignd and all the PC have the ip of the VLAN as their gateway
here is a part of the config on the mfsc

          interface Vlan10
          description computer-room
          ip address 172.16.10.254 255.255.255.0
          ip address 10.1.1.3 255.255.255.0 secondary
          no ip redirects
          no ip unreachables
          no ip proxy-arp
          bridge-group 5
          !
          interface Vlan11
          description BLDGB-2ndFLR
          ip address 172.16.11.254 255.255.255.0
          ip helper-address 172.16.10.228
          ip access-group 122 in
          bridge-group 5

the dhcp server has a ip of 172.16.10.228 and the clients having a 172.16.10.x obtain with no problem ip from the dhcp server

but the clients having a IP 172.16.11.x can obtain ip from the dhcp server

          this for ur information
          apprecite you reply

Re: setting u new dhcp server acrros vlans

Don't you still need the IPHelper as DHCP broadcasts won't go across the VLAN's.

We have a couple fo switches (Not Cisco switches) with VLAN's and use the IP Helper on them.

Re: setting u new dhcp server acrros vlans

I already have the ip helper address ..

I do have a cisco 2960 switch where the server is conneted and all its ports as vlan 10

and i have cisco 2950 switch which has all its ports as vlan 11 .

so i guess i do have th ip helper address command right

Is there any other place i need to put the ip helper address command

              regards

Do you have a scope setup on the DHCP server to issue addresses for that subnet???

Re: setting u new dhcp server acrros vlans

yes I do have scopes on my dhcp server
2 scopes on my dhcp server

one is for vlan 10 that is ip from 172.16.10.100 to 172.16.10.175

and the second for vlan 11 ip range from 172.16.11.50 to 172.16.11.125

as i said before server on vlan 10 with ip address of 172.16.2.228.

clients on vlan 10 ( that is connected to switch with vlan 10 ) get ip address correctly from dhcp server but client on vlan11 do not

                  thaks and regards

Re: setting u new dhcp server acrros vlans

Can you ping the VLAN interface 172.16.11.254 from the 172.16.10.x network???

I'm no Cisco guru but try removing

                    no ip redirects
                    no ip unreachables
                    no ip proxy-arp

                    and see if that works.

Check your trunk links to the access switches to make sure those vlans are allowed across the trunks. Also check for any filtering on the SVI's. Whey are you bridging on the SVI's?

Not sure how this reply fit here.... have u tried checking dhcp relay agents. Coz i know over different vlan/network you need this feature. Check this feature on DHCP and Switch

DHCP relay agents aren't needed when you configure an ip-helper address

You may want to create a Super Scope for the 172.16.10.x network with two individual scope entries beneath the Super Scope for the 172.16.10.x and the 172.16.11.x networks.

This should direct any requests to the appropriate VLAN. Post back if this worked.

                            Peace

configure the ip-helper address in the cisco switch for each vlan and create the corresponding vlan scope in the dhcp, it will work.
