  • Does DHCP server need DNS and Default Gateway ?

    hi,
I want to know a basic question that for making a DHCP server in windows server 2003 does it require DNS server to resolve computer names.

Just for example. I have 10 computers (Windows xp ) in a my lab and all are connected through a workgroup envioroment with a IP Scheme 192.168.1. There is no gateway as well.

For assigning automatic IP addresses from DHCP Server does it also need DNS and default gateway to work ?

For a verry simple network what we need ?

    1- Clients computers
    2-simple switch
3- windows server 2003 with dhcp

    please guide me ....

    thanks in advance

well, a default gateway is essential if you want your computers or servers to communicate outside the local subnet (ie, if you want them to use the internet)

dns is probably good as well, if only to have them able to resolve internet addresses. DNS will also _help_ to resolve internal computer names if you set it up. However - with 10 computers, do you have a real need for DNS?

dns is ESSENTIAL if you are using active directory.

DHCP will assign an IP address to a computer, yes. It is not essential to assign gateways or dns entries.

No and No to answer both questions.

As tehcamel said if you want to browse subnets outside you own, including the internet, then you WILL need a gateway as that is the address that clients will use to communicate with the outside world.

No your computers don't need DNS to resolve computer names. NetBIOS over TCP will take care of that. If you have it configured of course.

Now depending on what you want to achieve from this will determine what the next phase of answers will be.

If you want to know how DHCP works and how a machine requests an address from it then look here
