  • DHCP Server or Router

Hi Guys, Just a quick one on DHCP

We have one Server 2008 AD DNS server

is it better for the router or the Server to handle DHCP, does it matter as long as the DNS address is set correctly on the router?

Our router is currently configured to do the job, giving out IP addresses along with the IP of the DNS Server 2008

    Thanks

Well, the server will set more options than the router and also register addresses in DNS if needed, so IMHO switch off at the router and on at the server

Agree with Ossian, as the Windows Server will provide more DHCP options/flexibility. However, if the router provides you with all of the functionality you are looking for, then there is no need to add an additional service on the Windows server.

The less footprint on the server, the more reliable and more secure it can be.

use DHCP in the server and in the router use a IP helper address just to give you a help if you will use the superscope in DHCP server
