  • Unjoining a domain

    Hello,

    I have a server which i used to have as a domain controller on my active directory. I recently demoted the server to just a member server. Now when I try to go from a member server to just a standalone server i get the following error when put in the workgroup name and click apply;

    -The following error occured while trying to unjoin the domain "domain.net"
    -The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

    I don't know what to do at this point. The authentication to the server is now all screwed up and users can't get in to the shares that i have on that machine. Also if I try to repromote the machine to a domain controller, i get this following error;

    - The domain "domain.net" is not an active directory domain, or an Active directory domain controller for the domain could not be contacted.

    So I have no idea whats going on. Its like if the server is in limbo between being on the domain and not. Any ideas??

      I didn't know that i had to transfer any FSMO roles. All i wanted to do was demote this server to a standalone server. DNS is pointing to the correct place and I can ping the servers. Any other ideas.

        well check you're fsmo roles...
        which roles does you're other DC got?
        (ADUC --> right click Domain --> operations masters)

        which one is the GC?

        (ADSS --> site name --> Servers --> Servername --> Right click ntds settings)
