  • Changing theme for all users on AD

    Hello,

I want to change the windows theme for all users on the AD domain from the default Windows XP to the Windows Classic theme to improve performance for the users.

Is there a simple way that allows me to do this for all users centraly using AD or do I have to logon to each individual PC to change the theme? Whats the best way for me to go about this?

    Thanks in advance,

    Harry

Re: Changing theme for all users on AD

There is no way in ADUC and i have looked into doing this using Group Policy and no real luck. The only way i have found is to create a user profile with the theme of choice and copy that to other others.

I'd like to hear if anyone else has done this a different way.

    Thanks

      It's possible through GPO.
Because i'm not a systemadministrator anymore, i don't have any domain arround me, but i used google instead.

Ok fair enough, but that is not changing the theme, it is removing the theme really. If you want to 'change' the theme is there a way in GP?

          For example:
From the kiddy theme to the silver theme?

AFAIK that's not possible, but you can try to monitor the registry and place that into a policy.

However, the TS asked to switch to the classic mode, and that is possible I'm not quite sure if you delete all the themes with this GPO Setting

From the point of a guy who IS supporting sysadmins of external clients, you will not survive without a lab you can trash, rebuild, restore, etc...

Actually we have couple VS servers with a bunch of VMs just for testing purposes and can access those from Citrix portal when outside of office. Pretty useful if you ask me

Just getting back to the beginning of the thread. Do it via GPO as it was said or change it in the registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\ThemeManager

ThemeActive = 0 Windows Classic theme, 1 = Windows XP theme (or any other imported theme)
ColorName = NormalColor (blue windows xp), HomeStead (green) and Metallic (silver)

Re: Changing theme for all users on AD

you can actually get a GPO to do this to your AD users

create one in User configuration > administative templates > Control Panel > Display

in there you have "load a specific visual style or force windows classic"

Its got a path to visual style there, just enter in your path , so if you want them to have luna , enter

%windir%\resources\Themes\Luna\Luna.msstyles ( as it shows you there)

enfiore your GPO and waaalaa its pushed out to everyone!
