  • Restructure Win2k AD

Here's the situation if anyone wants to take a stab at it. We have two
sites that are connected via VPN. Originally there was Site A which was a
Windows NT domain and then migrated to a Win2k AD. Site B came online as a
stand alone Win2k AD. The previous network administrators from Site A and
Site B decided to merge both sites into one Win2k AD. Same forest and same
    domain.

The problem now is that Site A is wanting to upgrade to Win2k3 AD to take
advantage of several of the improvements, but Site B wants to wait. Given
the setup...is it possible to only bring Site A to Win2k3 or will the fact
that Site B is at Win2k AD effectively void any advantages of Win2k3?

Is there an easy way to seperate the AD into two domains within the same
forest? Any advice would be great.

    Hello,

At this moment you have one domain and two phisical site.
You can't upgrate only site A to windows 2003. Both sites take part in the same domain.

If you plan to install windows 2003 DC into your windows 2000 domain or upgrade a window 2000 DC to windows 2003 you first need to preper AD running adprep /forestrep and adprep /domainprep.

After the AD preparation took place, you can create a new windows 2003 domain in the forest.
Since there will be a wind 2000 domain also, KEEP the forest functional lavel at
    Windows 2000 native.

      Re: Restructure Win2k AD

Can I upgrade the DCs in Site A to Win2k3 and leave the DCs in Site B at Win2k?

Will I then be able to use new features of Win2k3 AD? (Specifically we want to use the improved DFS and some of the new GPOs)

Do these new features require that the domain functional level be at Win2k3?

      Thanks.

        Re: Restructure Win2k AD

Again, there is no matter how many sites you have. What contains is that YOU HAVE ONE FOREST and ONE DOMAIN.

In order to upgrade to Windows 2003 DC in one or both of your sites you have to prepare the domain and forest running adprep.

Please see the following link regarding to domain and forest functionality.
        http://technet2.microsoft.com/Window....mspx?mfr=true

If you are interested in DFS I suggest you Windows 2003 R2.
In Windows 2003 R2 DFS was renamed to Dfs namespace. But not only renamed but the service comes with several new features like target priority, client failback, enhanced replication etc.
