  • completely remove dns from ad 2003

    Hi,

After a severe server crash and a not so succesfull resore. I had to reinstall active directory. The problem is that it seemed to remember dns settings from the old configuration. Hence a lot of dns errors. I tried to remove dns and add it again, but windows doesn't allow me to add a new dns server with the name "denhelder.local" because it's already there.

Is it possible to remove all traces of dns from the server and start over again?

    Hello,
    questions:
    1. Did you remove the entire Active Directory or only one DC from the domain?
    2. Is denhelder.local an active directory integrated zone?

I had to remove the active directory from the domain. (database corrupt because of a power faillure) It's a brand new machine and we didn't configure backups yet.
The client did't believe in ups for protection, even though it is a factory witch suffers from power faillures regurlarly.
Iam a complete noob on 2003 ad so it was a big learning process setting it all up.

But this afternoon i found the solution: (typing this for general interest)
-convert dns to primary zone (uncheck integrate with active directory)
-remove dns in configure your server
      -remove dns folder from system32
      -in system32\config remove netlogon.dnb and netlogon.dns
reinstall dns (configure your server) with the correct zone name

      then at the command prompt:

      ipconfig /registerdns
      net stop netlogon
      net start netlogon

      Glad i got it working!
      And thanks for responding!
