  • AD Migration from 2003 to 2012 R2 but retaining the server name

    Hi

The instructions below work extremely well when replacing hardware and an old 2003 AD controller with a new 2012 controller. However, if I need to transfer the name of the old server to the new server, how could these instructions be amended to allow that?

    Thanks

Not checked the instructions in detail, but I would:
Prepare new server but do not join domain
Rename old DC as per https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/...(v=ws.10).aspx
Join new server to domain and DCPROMO

Why do you need the new DC to have the same name?

I would personally do it a bit different.

      1. Build a VM using a Server OS that is available to you, 2012 as you appear to have it.
      2. Create a temporary DC and verify that replication is working as expected.Transfer all relevant roles from the old DC to the new DC, note i did not say the FSMO roles but you can do these if required.
      3. If the same hardware is being used backup the old DC fully.
      4. Demote the old DC and then rename or follow the instructions for a DC rename

      https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/...or=-2147217396

      5. Install your OS onto the relevant hardware or VM as required. This will be the final VM.
      6. Update the OS fully and name as the old server.
      7. Promote and check replication is working.
      8. Demote the temporary DC and delete the VM.

That should pretty much cover the change.
