  • Pros/Cons of restoring production domain controller to lab enviornment

We will be building out an isolated lab, and our thought is that our current domain has so many legacy configurations that we are not going to get a good replication of our production enviornment by building it from scratch so we are looking to restore or clone a domain controller from our production domain to the lab.

Looking for feedback from others who have done this on the pros and cons of this approach, or any other considerations that need to be factored in before making such a decision.

If this lab is on a network that's isolated from the production network then back up the DC and restore it or clone it. It really doesn't matter which method you use.

Or add an additional DC to the production network, let it replicate, then detach to the lab and run a metadata cleanup in live.

All will work, and as long as the lab DC never, ever, comes back to the production network, all are equally effective
