  • Implement the Volume Shadow Copy Service on Windows Server 2003 file server

    Good Day.

I want some suggestions on how to implement the volume shadow copy service on windows file server 2003 to be able to backup windows 7/XP users data periodically.
Need to know how to if it is possible.

    Thank you.

Shadow Copies are NOT a backup. They are a snapshot of a file taken at a time specified in the settings. They are NOT a backup and should not be used as such.

Also note the Server 2003 is End of Life on 14 July 2015. After that there shall be no more updates unless you sell you entire being to Microsoft for the privilege of getting them.

I don't think you understand what Shadow Copy actually does. AFAIK it runs locally on the server and its only for shared folders not remotely.

However to enable it on a Server 2003 system

      https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/...(v=ws.10).aspx

This might also be worth reading

Please ensure that you have a good working backup solution rather than relying on this.

Thank you for your reply and also pointing me to the right direction. I was going no where.
Now what is I am doing is, enabled system restore point in users end to allow users to roll back to previous versions if required. And also implement volume shadow copy in windows 2003 server for the share folders so that users can do the same for the network share folder also.

        thank you once again.
