  • Error while adding Windows XP Pro to domain

    Hi all,

All of our workstations are running Windows XP Professional SP2. The majority is joined to the domain (dc's running Windows 2003 SP1). A few of them is still running in a workgroup. Last week I've decided to add the last few to the domain.

At first everything went well, the computers are added to the domain. On the server I see their computernames under the 'AD Users and Computers' snap-in and I can drag them to the correct OU. After restarting the workstation the Windows logon box displays and I can choose to logon locally or to the domain.

Everything seems to be allright. However the domain computer policy isn't applied and Eventviewer shows the following error in the Application log:

    Event ID: 1054
    Source: Userenv
Description: Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your
computer network. (An unexpected network error occurred. ). Group Policy processing aborted.

Searching the Internet indicates that there must be a problem with SRV records in DNS. The DNS servers used by the workstations (issued through DHCP)are domain controllers as well. Both servers are pingable and resolve internal and external hostnames without any problems. There is no hugh latency between domain controllers and the workstation, latency is less than 20ms.

I've already taken the following steps:

    - Running netdiag.exe and dcdiag.exe on the domain controllers shows no errors.
    - I've ran the following nslookup commands on the workstation:

    nslookup
    > set type=srv
    > _ldap.tcp.dc._mscds.domainnamegoeshere.com

This returns normal output without any errors.

I hope someone can help me out with this problem. Thanx in advance!

I've already read the KB article while googling the problem . Unfortunately it doesn't apply to my case. The DNS-servers used by the workstations are the right ones. I've checked and doublechecked it to be sure.

The DNS servers are reachable and can be used with nslookup.

what have you tried so far?

Tried it also after you disabled the AV and Firewall sofware on the client?

Quite a while ago I have had the exact same problem. In my case updating the network card driver resolved the issue. Maybe you should give it a try too.

Re: Error while adding Windows XP Pro to domain

              Hello,

if something seems not working at network level maybe a netmon
trace of a test workstation will be a good first step.

you can also try to install the support tools and run the following command==>

How Domain Controllers Are Located in Windows XP
              http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314861
              ...
Use the nltest /dsgetdc:domainname command to verify that a domain controller can be located for a specific domain. The NLTest tool is installed with the Windows XP support tools.
              ...
this command will simulate the research that the workstation make to look for a DC.

than maybe reproduce your problem or give you more errors ans indication.

how many DC have you in the impacted site?

              cheers

                Hi,
Are you able to ping DC from your computer. Try to disable any firewall and virus protection and try it again. double check your dns and wins addresses.
                cheers
