  • Trouble removing child domain

We have a root domain with 3 sub domains. We are trying to remove all but one of the sub domains, leaving a root and one child.

We have 1 DC left in the first domain to be removed. It holds the 3 domain-specific fsmo roles (Infrastructure, RID, PDC). When we run DCPROMO, selecting that it IS the last DC in the domain, it fails with this error (changed domain name for privacy reasons). Any ideas? Thanks!

    The operation failed because:

Active Directory Domain Services could not transfer the remaining data in directory partition DC=ForestDnsZones,DC=HCOM,DC=MY,DC=COMPANY,DC=DOT, DC=COM to
    Active Directory Domain Controller \\

"The directory service is missing mandatory configuration information, and is unable to determine the ownership of floating single-master operation roles."

Check to make sure there's no other old DCs that need metadata cleanup.
Also make sure the Domain Naming Master role is on a valid DC and can be contacted.
