  • last domain controller question

    theoretical question:

    1. 3 DC in domain Level 2003 with 2008 schema
    2. Demote one (2003) with the option "last domain controller"

    Would domain be wiped out?

    Re: last domain controller question

No, but the demoted DC would become a workgroup member rather than a member server in the original domain

(Note this is from memory, so corrections welcome)

      Re: last domain controller question

it means that the option last domain controller have no influence.
the server will become a member server regardless this option.

      Correct?

        Re: last domain controller question

        The server will become either:
a member of the current domain (if "last DC" is NOT selected)
a member of a workgroup (if "last DC" IS selected

          Re: last domain controller question

Still a newbie so correct me if I'm wrong, checking last domain controller in the domain will signal a clean up of the metadata for the domain, so you might encounter dns and AD errors on the remaining '03 DCs. Checking the option should demote the server to a workgroup because the domain no longer exists.

            Re: last domain controller question

The remaining DCs should still work (but might need a metadata cleanup if they think the demoted DC is still there)
The demoted DC will definitely be in a workgroup
