  • Upgrading to 2008 R2 and I have an underscore in the Pre-2000 domain name

I want to upgrade my domain to 2008 R2 and I have an underscore in the pre-2000 Domain name of the current 2003 Active Directory Domain.

I want to know the proper way to upgrade. I heard that the underscore is an invalid name and will cause issues.

I currently have Exchange 2003 and I am concerned this will be affected also?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I do have that document and that looks like the way to go but I am not 100% sure as my domain is, for an example mydomain.com and the pre-Windows 2000 is my_nt (Netbios name I believe). My domain is listed everywhere as mydomain.com such as Active Directory sites and services, Active Directory Users and Computers, DNS, etc the only place it uses the my_nt is the domain listing when users log in.

I guess what i am asking is does this constitute a entire domain name change procedure or is this something that is minor and will be just fixed when I do the ADprep or DCPROMO it.

It appears that you will need to rename your domiain using the above document.

Please see this though if you have an Exchange 2007 or 2010 system in place

        http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...8WS.10%29.aspx

        Important
The domain rename operation is not supported in Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 or Exchange Server 2010. DNS domain rename is supported in Exchange Server 2003. However, renaming of the NetBIOS domain name is not supported in any version of Exchange Server. Other non-Microsoft applications might also not support domain rename.

For more information about other Microsoft applications that are incompatible with domain rename, see article 300684 (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=185229) in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.
