  • Upgrading AD to 2008 and Exchange to 2010

Hi, we have an older 2003 AD with 2003 exchange system where the domain name actually has an underscore within the name "domain_name" and if we are understanding correctly, new 2008 AD domain names cannot have an underscore in the name. Knowing that we are upgrading exchange as well, all on new servers, what is the best sequence of events here for the upgrade?
    - Set up a new AD 2008 server with a new domain name? upgrade and rename? if so, how do we do it?
    - Exchange upgrade? Do this after the rename of the domain name?
    - can we leave the underscore in the domain name?

Hope this won't become a nightmare....

IMHO read and use the article on the main site to rename your domain before you do anything else:
    http://www.petri.com/windows_2003_domain_rename.htm
    then:
Upgrade relevant DCs to at least 2003 SP2
    Upgrade AD FLs to 2003
    (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../aa996719.aspx)
If you are moving AD to 2008, do it before Exchange

Then install Exchange, extending the schema when required.

I would solve the problem with the domain name before worrying about Exchange. If you have Exchange 2003 with SP2, on a box with 2003 server with at least SP2, upping the domain functional level won't affect it.
