  • Server Hardware Replacement for existing DC

    Hi,

I have an inquiry about replace server hardware for existing DC

    Existing environment
    DC OS: Windows Server 2003
DC Forest and Domain Functional level: Windows Server 2003
    Model: Single Forest, Single Domain
    Computer name: XXXXX-AD01
    IP Address: 192.168.33.40
Remark: This is ROOT DC (hold FSMO role)
We have few more active DC as backup

Existing Server Hardware already more than 6 years old, we would like to replace a new server hardware.

I try search on internet and summaries some steps to follow as below.
    1) Join a new installed server as Domain Controller to your existing domain
    DC OS: Windows Server 2008
    Computer name: XXXXX-AD02
    IP Address: 192.168.33.41

    2) Transfer unique FSMO roles from the old DC the new DC

    3) Demote the old DC

    Inquiry
    1. After new installed server as ROOT DC, can I change the IP address from 192.168.33.41 to 192.168.33.40?
The reason is existing all the PCs (more than 500) are refer 192.168.33.40 as primary DNS.
We do not have DHCP server, it is hard for me to change all the Primary DNS setting to refer to new IP address.

    2. Can I rename the new installed server computer name as XXXXX-AD01 after old DC had demoted and dispose?

Re: Server Hardware Replacement for existing DC

what is your reason for not having dhcp ? do you have less than 5 computers? (I've only got devices at home, and I still use it.)

short answer is, yes, you can change the ip address.
However, you then need to re-register dns.

    (ipconfig /registerdns)
