  • Upgrade primary domain controller from win2k to win2k3

We have a separate domain as wdhs.local . We have single DC in the domain (pdc) and its windows 2000 server . I want to upgrade the existing dc to windows 2003 server that remove the earlier win2k DC out of domain . Can you please help me out like what all steps I need to follow and what strategy to adopt ?

    Just a quick answer:

    1. Ensure there are no major errors in the event log on the w2k box
    2. Build and patch new w2k3
    3. Join w2k3 server to existing domain
    4. run adprep /forestpret (http://www.petri.co.il/windows_2003_adprep.htm)
    5. run adprep /domainprep (http://www.petri.co.il/windows_2003_adprep.htm)
    6. Install (AD intergraded)
    7. Install DHCP
    8. DCPROMO w2k3 server
    9. Transfere fsmo roles from w2k to w2k3 (http://www.petri.co.il/transferring_fsmo_roles.htm)
    10. Configure DHCP and authorise scope
    11. Transfere licesening server from w2k to w2k3
    12. Ensure w2k3 server is a GC

    This should get you going

P.s. You should try and have two Active Directory server both running DHCP, DNS and both global Catalogues incase something happens to one of them
