    Can a subdomain be in a separate Windows AD Forest then it's parent.

    I.e can example.com and sub.example.com be in separate forests?

    Absolutely NOT
    They must be in the same forest, and in the same tree

    You could probably do something where example.com and sub.example.com were in separate forests but they would not be parent and child, just, coincidentally, share the same namespace
