  • Additional DC Not Working When Main DC Is Offline

    Hi All,

    I have the following situation:

    Domain xxx.local

    Active Directory Master (dc1.xxx.local) - Windows Server 2003 R2 32-Bit

    Additional DC (dc2.xxx.local) - Windows Server 2008 32-Bit (not R2 release)

I performed a dcpromo on DC2 to create the additional DC for the domain xxx.local and all went through fine.

Replication is being done between DC1 and DC2

However, I've tested trying to run only on DC2 in case DC1 is down - disable DC1's NIC.

As soon as I've done this, AD on DC2 fails stating it can't contact the AD for Domain xxx.local.

When I re-enable NIC on DC1 - AD on DC2 is up again.

    Did I mess up somewhere?

Is there any specific changes to be made to DNS settings? While DCPROMOTING DC2, I stuck with default settings and checked Global Catalog and DNS.

    Thanks for any replies.

Is DC2 a GC? Does DC2 point to itself for primary DNS and DC1 for secondary DNS?

      Hi joeqwerty.

      Yes, DC2 is a GC.

And for DNS - it is primary : 127.0.0.1 secondary: DC1

Change the DNS server settings to the servers real IP address rather than 127.0.0.1.

How long are you leaving the server off for???

          Hi.

I have just changed the DNS settings to the servers real IP.

DC1 was 'out' for couple minutes when I tried the test.

The error msg I received is attached below

Can you please run a dcdiag and netdiag on both servers and post the results here.

              Considering belowpoints
              1. DC1 is down.
              2. DC2 is pointing to itself as primary DNS. (asuming you are using AD integrated zone)

Since DC1 seems root DC, did we transfer FSMO roles before taking the DC1 is down?

you don't always just transfer FSMO roles like that.

he's talking about DR testing.. if your DC Is gong to be down for half an hour, you don't transfer the roles because it's not necessary..
