  • _gc record missing in _tcp of dns console

    I've got a strange occurance.

I recently promoted a child domain to be a GC.

    C:\Documents and Settings\master>nltest /dsgetdc:deng.ad.trek.com /server:dc1
    DC: \\dc1.deng.ad.trek.com
    Address: \\129.211.8.3
    Dom Guid: 70b212e7-6900-4499-a149-b7b216a3df84
    Dom Name: deng.AD.trek.com
    Forest Name: AD.trek.com
    Dc Site Name: AD
    Our Site Name: AD
Flags: PDC GC DS LDAP KDC TIMESERV WRITABLE DNS_DC DNS_DOMAIN DNS_FOREST
    CLOSE_SITE
    The command completed successfully

The flags inidicate it is a GC , but for some reason under the _tcp there is no _gc record. I'm not sure why.

Under the site and services, for the specified DC, in its NTDS setting, the global catalog is checked.

I'm not sure why it does not have a _gc record. I've rebooted te machine and the record still does not show up. In the directory service event i did get:

Active Directory has located a global catalog in the following site.

    Global catalog:
    \\dc1.deng.ad.trek.com
    Site:
    AD

So it would seem that it is a global catalog, yet the dns records is not there.

Does the record only exist for the global catalog for a root forest and not for the child domain gc?

That's it, exactly. The _msdcs of the forest root is special. That is why it has a forest-wide replication scope since W2003. The GC's (all of them) only register as such in the forest root.

Just remember that GC is holding a partial set of the whole FOREST, hence it's forest-wide function
