  • RODC Conversion

I'm looking to see if there is a way to change a full-DC to a RODC without having to demote the current full-DC, then promote to a RODC.

    I am running Server 2008 R2 in a 2008 R2 domain.

I think the only way is indeed demote and promote. What do you want to accomplish with the RODC. If the only reason is security of the data on the hard drive, you can also think about enabling bitlocker on the DC.

      Re: RODC Conversion

Basically, we have a new remote hosting solution for our primary application.

Part of the agreement was that we would have 2 domain on controllers at their datacenter with sites to take some of the domain traffic off of the private WAN link.

We own the domain controllers and manage them completely, the remote hosting company only owns the VMWare enviroment and hardware the DCs run in.

I'm probably just going to proceed with a demotion, then promote of each of the 2 domain controllers. I'll probably, demote one in the morning, then promote it that evening. Rinse and repeat with the other DC the following day.
