  • Return AD Server to Service

    Greetings,
My AD Server had failed, but I DCPromo'd a machine before its total death.

I have now repaired the failed unit (did not effect the hard drives).

I want to bring this back into the domain. What do I do ? It was the machine I created the AD on.

    thanks,

    Hi

My AD Server had failed, but I DCPromo'd a machine before its total death.
Do you mean that you have additional domain controller

If you have rebuilt this server with a different name and you want to add it as member server you can do that.

If it's the machine with same name make sure you have performed metadata cleanup for your failed and dead dc, make sure computer account is no longer present under domain controller container.
    Thanks & Regards

Replacement hardware (exactly same) with failed systems drives.

Pointer to the cleanup you mentioned.

Also, since I promoted a different server, DNS has been laggy.

      thanks.

OK, best thing is to do a rebuild of the failed machine rather than trying to bring it back as is, or it could bring old data into AD.

Remove traces of it using a metadata cleanup and make sure the new Dc holds all the FSMO roles. Deal with your DNS problem (any more details than "laggy"?) too.

REbuild the old machine with a new name, join to domain and DCPromo

Re: Return AD Server to Service

          Well,
when I dcpromo'd the other server (when the primary failed), I am not sure if I have done every step related to DNS.

Read something about having to do something when you promoted a server or else DNS will do a full lookup every time ?

          thanks.

removing all the meta data cleanup.
            seizing fsmo roles.
removing the computer name from the sites , domain controllers ou etc.

please let me know the answer

              @Bkarthikkeyan
Is this a comment on the previous posts or a request for help with a different problem?
If it is the latter, please give more information about your problem and I will split to a new thread.
