  • Emergency-AD down

    Greetings,
I have an active directory. It is windows 2003 server based.

I have another member server, but it was sync'd with the primary a long time ago.

Today the AD server was down. I managed to get it back up an running and now want to sync things up. I also need to figure out how to cover the DNS server done by the AD server.

Please help. I am worried the AD server will drop and I will be totally screwed.

Install a new server. Install DNS on new server. Run DCPromo on new server. Done.

      Re: Emergency-AD down

      Hi,

Run dcpromo wizard> select additional DC >
Make sure to install dns server prior to installation
follow the onscreen instruction make sure you make sure you make it a GC as well.

use replmon to force replication and use repadmin to check status of replication

latter you need to move over your service being host on older AD like dhcp or other similar services.
      Thanks & Regards

        Re: Emergency-AD down

I don't have a new server to install on.

I have an existing server that is running an application that is a member server in the domain. When I made it a member server ( a year ago), it sync with the ad server.

I want to fix up and continue to use the current ADserver, but I want to sync AD to the other server and setup DNS server on the other server so if the ADserver dies and can't be recovered, we can continue to operate.

        thanks.

          ok.
on a 2003 server I have I went to add/remove and added dsn to ther server.
Do I need to configure dns prior to doing the add/remove for active directory.

I then do the dcpromo as recommended ?

            Re: Emergency-AD down

If your DNS is AD integrated then you don't need to do anything else with DNS, just run DCPROMO.

              Re: Emergency-AD down

Once you dcpromo your server then you open dnsmgmt.msc and select the forward lookup zone and then select appropriate option to save data in AD
              Thanks & Regards
