  • Win2000 to 2003 Migration plan

Can anyone see any problems with the following migration plan.

    Current set-up

ServerA - W2Ksrv, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, File & Print, FSMO
ServerB - W2Ksrv, Active Directory, DNS, Exchange 2003

    New Set-up

    ServerA - W2Ksrv, File & Print
    ServerB - W2Ksrv, Exchange 2003
ServerC - W2k3srv, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, FSMO
ServerD - W2k3srv, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP

    Plan

Build and patch 2 x new windows 2003 servers (ServerC & ServerD )
    Set static IP address 10.x.x.17 & 10.x.x.18
Physically move servers to new locations and connect to network
Install DNS and DHCP on ServerC & ServerD
Run ADPrep /forestprep on ServerA - wait for replication
Run ADPrep /domainprep on ServerA - wait for replication
Promote ServerC to be a Domain Controller
Set ServerC to be a global catalogue - wait for replication
Promote ServerD to be a Domain Controller
Set ServerD to be a global catalogue - wait for replication
Ensure DNS is set-up to be active direcotry intergrated on ServerC & ServerD - wait for replication
Transfere FSMO roles from ServerA to ServerC - wait for replication
Set-up DHCP on ServerC & ServerD (50/50 scope)
    Export Database ServerA to ServerC
Authorise DHCP on ServerC & ServerD
    Unauthorise DHCP on ServerA
Update all equipment with static IP addresses to point to new DNS servers
    Demote ServerA
    Demote ServerB
    Uninstall DHCP from ServerA
Uninstall DNS from ServerA & ServerB

I think I have everything covered. The onyl thing I am not too sure on is demoting ServerB due to it having exchange 2003 on - Should this cause any probelms?

Anything I have missed out on?

    Thanks

Good instincts. Indeed, this is not supported, and yes, this will cause problems. Perhaps Daniel can confirm this, but this looks like the procedure
    - deinstall exchange
    - demote the DC
    - reinstall Exchange in recovery mode.
    - recover the databases.

The rest looks fine btw. I seem to remember we discussed this before

Was probably about when we were adding 2 new wk2 AD servers but this is now being scrapped and were going for 2003 (All my winging on paid off) and there going on their own dedicated servers

      Hopefully Daniel reads every post

      Cheers for the info

Are you going to use the same server for Exchange??

If not i would use one of the new servers. Install exchange into the exisiting enviornment. Move the mailboxes from one server to the other. Uninstall the exchange server on the old DC.

        This may help.

Yes we are going to still use ServerB as an exchange 2003 server. The idea is to get away from having it as an AD and DNS server

Have a look at this also.

It does say 2000 but i wouldn't imagine any difference with 2003

I'll take a look at it.

Ideally all I want to do is demote the exchange 2003 server to a member server but I got a feeling it's not going to be easy.

Personally i feel that once you have exchange in and running you should leave it alone. It is one of those things that if monitored correctly you will get very little trouble with.

I dug this up and it makes some interesting reading.

I still feel it would be easier to install a new 2003 server. Leave it as a member server, install exchange then move the mailboxes from your old exchange box to the new one.

Also make sure to visit the following KB to avoid getting mangled attributes when running the adprep /forestprep :

                    We are running exchange 2003

I was aware of it but it shouldn't affect us

                    Thanks anyway
