  • SRV records missing after promoting windows server 2003 to DC

    Dear all,

Please I am taking the MCSA/MCSE exams and at present studying for 070-291. I do follow every step in the MS press self study book and installed the server 2003. Every test works well but when I promoted the server to DC the SRV records that I am supposed to see are missing. I am told in the book that under domain1.local (this is the domain name I follow according to the book) six other subdomains should appear under domain1.local but none of these subdomains appeared. I installed the DNS server according to the guidelines given in the book. The server is installed on a PC named computer1 which has 2GB RAM and 120 GB hard drive. The server was demoted twice and each time it was reinstalled but the problem still exists. Below is the test from the
The server is configured to use static IP address 192.168.0.1 but the adapter being used for the internet connection is set to obtain its address automatically and is 192.168.1.5

    Hi,

Can you check your network cards. I see this failure. Is this computer connected to any network or just a standalone machine.

    Netcard queries test . . . . . . . : Failed

Do you have multihome nic or multiple nics
    Adapter : MyISP

    Netcard queries test . . . : Failed

    Default Gateway. . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
    Dns Servers. . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

Since this is a test machine. I would suggest you to disable both the NICs and create a microsoft virtual host adpated with loop back address 127.0.0.1.
Make sure you also install dns while doing a DC promo

Re: SRV records missing after promoting windows server 2003 to DC

      Hello V-2nas,

The computer is a stand alone server for study purposes. There are 2 NICs; MyISP connected to the internet and set to obtained IP automatically. The other NIC server_1 is the internal adapter configured to use static IP address. I have other 2 computer and these computers are able to connect to the internet through the server_1. I did a ''route print'' on this computer and the result is as below:

Re: SRV records missing after promoting windows server 2003 to DC

Do you have at least forward lookup zones created. If not then create one manually.

        Then do this
        ipconfig /registerdns
        net stop netlogon
        net start netlogon

        Then check

        else

Since this is a test machine. I would suggest you to disable both the NICs and create a microsoft virtual host adpated with loop back address 127.0.0.1.

Re: SRV records missing after promoting windows server 2003 to DC

Well it isn't really necessarily if he still want to use the Internet.
However, you have enabled 2 nics.

          Host Name. . . . . . . . . : computer1
          IP Address . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.5
          Subnet Mask. . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
          Default Gateway. . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
          Dns Servers. . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

          Host Name. . . . . . . . . : computer1
          IP Address . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
          Subnet Mask. . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
          Default Gateway. . . . . . :
          Dns Servers. . . . . . . . :

Personally I would disable the second nic, reconfigure the first nic to point the DNS configuration to himself (192.168.1.5 instead of .1) and if necessarily add forwarders to the DNS.

Re: SRV records missing after promoting windows server 2003 to DC

Yes I have forward lookup zone configured. I think I need to configure the loop back address as suggested by V-2nas. And also change both network cards to new ones and see what happens.

The suggestion to disable the 2 nics have been done several times but the problem remains the same.

Thank you so much guys. I will let you know what the results are when I finish with the suggestions given so far. Stay blessed.

              Hi V-2nas and Dumber,

I have been playing around the configurations of my set up by changing the order in which network services should access network cards, and by that the nics have passed the query test and also my DNS server points to itself. But the problem is that another error code ( DNS_ERROR_RCODE_NOT_IMPLEMENTED) EMERGED. Any ideas about this code please. Thanks for your usual helps. The results are below:

                Hi,

Can you check if you _msdsc zone in your DNS?
                Thanks & Regards

                  Hi V-2nas,

Thanks for the reply. There is no _msdcs zone created. These zones are supposed to be created under my zone domain1.local but so far none is created.

Re: SRV records missing after promoting windows server 2003 to DC

Do you have a SOA (Start of Authority) record in DNS? The RCODE error means that the nameserver does not support that type of query.

                      ok,

                      Try In this way…

If it is the _msdcs.<YourADForestName> zone, simply Create a new Forward
Lookup zone named _msdcs.<YourADForrestName> allow dynamic updates and
restart the Netlogon service and issue ipconfig /registerdns command. (all records in this zone are registered by the Netlogon service on DCs)
                      Thanks & Regards

Re: SRV records missing after promoting windows server 2003 to DC

                        Hello V-2nas and Blood,

I have created the _msdcs.<YourADForestName> and the resource records are created automatically after running the service stop and start commands. When I run the DcDiag /fix command the result was successful but, the NetDiag /fix command is still the same (DNS_ERROR_RCODE_NOT_IMPLEMENTED) error.

On the issue raised by Blood, yes the Start of Authority (SOA) are created. please any remedy for that.

Thank you all for sacrifice so far.

Stay blessed and I wish you all MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR.

                        Wissywise.

                          Hi V-2nas,

I have also enable secure dynamic update on the zone and re-run the commands and fortunately all the resource records are updated. I will try connecting the member computers and see what happens and let you know the result.

Thanks so much for your tremendous help and stay blessed.

                            Hi V-2nas,

Your method had finally worked. All the resource records are updated and computers are able to join the domain without any error message. It's been a long journey to resolve this.

Thanks so much and stay blessed and MERRY CHRISTMAS.
