  • Ad and Group policy issues with Parent/Child domain

I'm having real trouble trying to figure out what is causing this and how to fix it.

We have 2 domains (domain A) and (domain B)

domain A is the parent domain in the forest and domain B is the child, both are connected by a 10Mb wan connection. The problem occurs when when a computer in domain B tries to process group policy. It always looks to domain A first and then, if it sees that domain A s up , it gets the policy from a domain controller in domain B, if the connection between the two domains is down, then it will abort trying to apply group policy.

This has caused major headaches for me in the last few months. Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

It a computer and user group policy, It being applied from the local domain controller (domain B).

If you run a gpupdate /force it errors out right away.

Re: Ad and Group policy issues with Parent/Child domain

I don't have the exact error message in front of me Im not at that location today, but it was about not accessing Domain A ( the wan connection was down at the time) so it would not apply GP.

Domain A is the main domain in the forest
A DC in Domain A supplies all the GPs for all the computers in that domain.

          Domain B is the Child
A DC in Domain B supplies all the GPs for all the computers in that domain.

Each domain has its own DNS servers, and DCs

In Domain B (since this is the one we are having the issues with) the computers have their own OU depending on location, (like a lab or classroom) with loopback processing turned on.

The site has a nortel backbone, as the main router with nortel switches and a cisco asa firewall and VPN

I would review your Active Directory Sites and Services settings and verify that your subnets are correctly configured and linked to the correct site.

              Hi,

For verifing sites you can run nltest command... need to have support tools installed..
beside verify your gpo using GPO best practice analyzer. Just google it, download and install it.
              Thanks & Regards
