  • what tools you use for Help Desk instead of AD delegation?

    Hi,
I would like to ask what third party apps for Help Desk group are used for managing simple Administrator's task.

    Thx.

Give examples of the "simple tasks" please!
At the end of the day, you will have to delegate permissions somewhere.

I use Hyena as an alternative to ADUC

In server 2008 R2 you have the Active Directory Administration Center console

NetIQ has a rather nice web based console for user and group creating etc, and so does ManageEngine.

I ment password manager and related... FOR HELP DESK. So the idea is to limit access to RSAT or ADUC.

This what I found from SYSOPTOOLS:

"Allow Help Desk staff to quickly reset user passwords and unlock user accounts without giving them access to an Active Directory Users and Computers console. All activities are logged for auditing and access to specific software features are controlled via Group Policy or delegated rights. Account Manager is the perfect help desk software solution!

Account Manager help desk software for Active Directory user accounts is an easy to use password reset and account unlock application that runs locally on a Windows-based workstation or server. No install required, run it from a file share if needed. Account Manager allows IT staff to quickly address common daily tasks such as: Change or reset a user domain password, unlock a user domain account, disable / enable a user account, and verify a userís identity during a help desk call by viewing AD account attributes.

The primary purpose for this tool is to provide a path for your help desk staff to handle common user account and password related issues without having to give them full admin rights and access to an Active Directory MMC console. Account Manager can be used on a specific OU, group, or the entire domain. Rights to perform specific actions within Account Manager are controlled by standard group policies and you may configure these rights as appropriate for use in your environment. Using delegated rights, you can allow your IT staff to perform some or all of the available actions in Account Manager. All activities performed by the Account Manager tool are logged to the local computerís event log for auditing, or the output can be redirected to a central Syslog server.

If you use our Password Reset PRO Self Service portal software, there is also an included feature to quickly reset a userís self service enrollment profile.

The perfect companion tool to go along with Password Reminder PRO and Password Reset PRO! "

Good suggestion- Your links don't work btw, can you fix? We use both Password Reset PRO (web based password self service portal for AD) and the Account Manager password reset tool- They are both fantastic. Finally, software that does not suck, is easy to install and is very secure for real external use. It's also not expensive and their support is tops.

Ask their support staff for their new version 3 of Password Reset PRO- it is not on their website yet, it is cool because you can deploy the self service portal in several different access modes- totally sweet. Find it at sysoptools.com

If you need just a couple of tasks, you can always write or "loan" a few scripts or PowerShell cmd-lets.

It very easy to write a vbs to reset a password. However, you will still need delegation.
