  • Problem creating child domain win 2003 ent x64

    Hi All,

I am facing an issue where i am trying to promote a server to child domain. Here is the setup

single forest 2 domain each has one child
    microsoft.com (root)----> sales.microsoft.com
contoso.com----> product.consto.com (this is where i am getting issue)

Basically i have followed the below mentioned article, creating first dns and then promoting it to child domain

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255248

however when i ran dcpromo i end with this
please refer to the screenshot attached

I have netbios over tcpip enabled
tcp/ip dns setting pointing to itself
with in dnsmgmt.msc forwarder are setup to parent root dns (contoso and microsoft)

I have enterprise admin account and i am able to browse using unc path

also i have attached dcpromoui.log and dcpromo.log for your referrence and review

any help resolving this is much appreciable

Have you any firewalls of AV software perhaps blocking ports?

Sorry, but no way am I (or many readers) going to open an unknown zip file -- please repost as txt files.

Since contoso.com is one of Microsofts training domains, I presume this is a lab not a live environment? How have you set it up?

Double check your new DC can contact the FSMO holder in the root domain by name and fqdn.

Re: Problem creating child domain win 2003 ent x64

        Hi,

I have uploaded the logs in txt format.
        Name resolution works
netdom query fsmo /domain:microsoft.com and /domain:contoso.com shows up fsmo role
I am able to ping all the servers
server is accessible using unc path too
        No av or firewall yet
This is a test lab but worth doing it.

I have created a childdomian sales.microsoft.com without first installing the dns
now this time i am first tried to setup the dns as best practice and promoting it as product.contoso.com

I have followed the below mentioned article to create the dns server
        http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255248

but so far i am trying to find the way to resolve the error
I have also tried connecting it the domain and then tried to promote it but it also fails and the machine gets out of the domain
i then have to remove the computer object from contoso.com domain

any other thoughts may be log will help
        Thanks & Regards

Re: Problem creating child domain win 2003 ent x64

          Hi Guys,

Got the child domain rolling now. The issue was this

On contoso.com, i ran dcdiag and found two issues
          connectivity test failure
knowofroleholder failure (i manually performed the test and it was successfully don't know why it replied with failure)

from the tips of connectivity test failure which is
          Testing server: Default-First-Site-Name\CONTSO-BDA0892E
          Starting test: Connectivity
          The host 52ebd762-aa5e-492e-bcde-6c6d13f818b4._msdcs.microsoft.com coul
d not be resolved to an
IP address. Check the DNS server, DHCP, server name, etc
          Although the Guid DNS name
          (52ebd762-aa5e-492e-bcde-6c6d13f818b4._msdcs.microsoft.com) couldn't
be resolved, the server name (CONTSO-BDA0892E.contoso.com) resolved to
the IP address (192.168.60.23) and was pingable. Check that the IP
address is registered correctly with the DNS server.
          ......................... CONTSO-BDA0892E failed test Connectivity

I have added parent root dns to forwarder
created guid record for contoso on parent root dns

          ran dcdiag /fix again
knowofrolesholder was fixed but connectivity still failed

well i tried to promote the server to child..wolla and it worked
now any ideas about fixing connectivity issue coz forest replication is broken

Well i pushed the replication and it's fixed now. Thx to all for coming forward.
