  • Upgrading WIN2K AD to WIN2K3 AD - need adivce on this plan

I need advice on upgrading my WIN 2000 (sp 4) AD domain to Win 2003. Here is the current setup. 2 Win 2000 AD DCís with one being the operations master. Both are in separate cities. (Chicago and Nashville). Iím planning to upgrade the DCís to WIN 2003 AD. Initially we will be adding 2 brand new servers in the Nashville office which is where the operations master will exist.

After doing a good deal of research and reading these are the steps Iíve some up with.

    Prep domain for WIN 2003:
    1. ADPrep /forestprep
    2. ADPrep /domainprep
This will be done on both WIN 2000 DCís.

    Install new WIN 2003 server:
    1. Build server
    2. Install AD
    3. Config TCP/IP settings and join domain
    4. Run DC Promo
    5. Check AD

Question: Does the server have to be a member of the domain before I run DC Promo?

Once new 2003 DC is up and running in AD, then move FSMO roles from the existing Operations Master to this new WIN 2003 DC. Retire old WIN 2000 Operations Master server.
Then, install 2nd new WIN 2003 server Ė following all the same steps above. From here I have my 2 new WIN 2003 DCís in Nashville.
The last step is the upgrade the WIN 2000 DC in Chicago to WIN 2003. Initially, my company wonít purchase a new server, but will in the future. So, I will need to upgrade this one. Iíve never been crazy about upgrading OSís as opposed to simply formatting and rebuilding with the new OS. Any comments on upgrading?

Thanks for reading and any advice.

    Install new WIN 2003 server:
    1. Build server
    2. Install AD
    3. Config TCP/IP settings and join domain
    4. Run DC Promo
    5. Check AD
Strange way, never seen someone installing AD
    Install new WIN 2003 server:
    0. Check you're current DC's with DCdiag and Netdiag
    1. Build server
    3. Config TCP/IP settings and join domain
    4. Run DC Promo
    5. Install DNS when needed through te wizard.
    5. Force AD replication
    6. Check AD functionallity
    7. Check other replications (like sysvol etc)
    8. Check again with DCdiag and Netdiag.

Question: Does the server have to be a member of the domain before I run DC Promo?
I thought no, but i''m not quite sure (long time ago when i installed a new server..) although it won't give a problem when he's already a member.

    Any comments on upgrading?
    Yes, Check it before upgrading.
Check is exually the most important thing.

Fix all errors Before starting (also those which are in the eventviewer),
Check the server with netdiag and DCdiag, and fix any problems.

      Additional comments:

      - All new DC's should also be Global Catalog
      - make sure to correct all DNS client settings still referring to old DC's.
