  • Restricting users from limiting desktop items below specific size.

Hi, We want to restrict only the desktop files to few MB's. Is there any way to restrict only the desktop files for users ? Could see googling that it is possible to restrict the user profile below certain limit but we want only desktop content to be restricted. Regards, Anishk

I'm not sure this can be done. Are you looking to set a limit on the size of the Desktop folder? Perhaps redirecting the folders and then using FSRM to control the size.
Out of interest, why do you wish to limit file size as opposed to folder size?

Agree with Blood: while the size of the desktop folder *may* be possible (depending on how your environment is set up), I've never seen anywhere that says you can limit the size of any file inside that folder.

Sorry, to be more clear, desktop folder of the users have to be limited to a specific limit and not the files placed in the desktop folders . This is just to prevent users placing all the files in desktop. At the same time, user should be able to place the files in their documents and downloads folder.

There is a group policy setting to delete all desktop content on log off - after losing everything a couple of times, users eventually learn

But that will not help us out in our case. we just want to limit the desktop folder size for all users logging into domain computers

Are the desktop folders redirected to a server?
If so, quotas under FSRM should be easy to set up. If not, Win7 and above support quotas but I believe it is "per user per volume" rather than more granular:
