  • inplace upgrade of Win 2k 8 R2 Standard AD to Win 12 Standard

    I currently have to AD's in my domain. AD1 - Win12 & AD2 Win 2k8.

is it possible to do an inplace upgrade of the Win2k8 AD server by simply inserting Win12 CD and running D:\support\adprep>adprep /forestprep

Yes, although IIRC 2012 will do the prep as part of introducing a new DC (yes: http://blogs.technet.com/b/activedir...rver-2012.aspx)

Although you can upgrade the DCs OS in place, I would look at a swing - introduce a temporary DC (if you only have one) and then unpromo/wipe/clean install 2012 on the old DCs hardware. If you have multiple DCs, don't bother about the temporary one

Don't forget to check any RAID controller drivers and see if they need upgraded BEFORE doing the Server.
      1 1 was a racehorse.
      2 2 was 1 2.

yeah I upgraded AD1 a few years ago, just wanted to make sure of it. I'll demote AD2, take it off the domain and then do a clean install of Win12 then promote it again. Thanks!
