  • Migrating AD from 2003 32bit to 2008 R2 64bit

My AD & DC Server running MS Windows Server 2003 32bit OS. Now I want to install a new Server with MS Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit to replace with the old one, can i migrate the server directly to 2008 R2 64 bit from 2003 32 bit by using 'adprep' utility..?

What do you mean by migrate? Do you have SHARES etc that you want to be transferred to the to be added Server 2008 R2 DC?

You can add the new Server to the network and add Server 2008 R2 as an additional DC. Once it has all replicated, then Server 2003 can be demoted ( DCPROMO ) and removed from AD.
    1 1 was a racehorse.
    2 2 was 1 2.

    2 2 1 1 2

You will need to run adprep32.exe on Server 2003. You will find the file at x:\support\adprep\adprep32.exe on the Server 2008 R2 media. The file Adprep.exe is the 64 bit version and will not run on the 32 bit version of Server 2003.

Please make sure that AD replication is working flawlessly between both DC's, before moving the FSMO roles.

The FSMO Roles will be moved automatically when the Server 2003 is DCPROMOed off AD (if it all goes right).
