  • Can't add clients to domain ?Help please

    Hi Guys,

I'm new to the world of Windows 2003 Server and the Active Directory. I made a Domain Controller by using the Wizard in the Managed my Server. But after creating the Domain I want to register other client using Windows XP Pro, i got an erro message that the Domain Name Habibalby.com does not exsist, please make sure the domain name is correct and try again.

I'm sure the domain name is correct becuase I'm login to the server using this domain name and it logs in sucessfully.

    Any help please ?

    Regards,

Re: Can't add clients to domain ?Help please

back up a little bit, when do you get this error message what exactly are you doing on the interface to attempt to add clients?

From the client machine make sure your going properties of "my computer" ->computer name tab-> click change, then enter the domain name. it SHOULD prompt you for a name/password after this, if it does enter one with domain admin privlidges. That should work.

If this is where your getting hung up and it says domain does not exist when you type it. Go back and do some some troubleshooting on IP connectivity, (click start> run> type cmd) try pinging the domain controler, default gateway , dns. these will all probably be the address of the domain controler/server if your not getting a reply with a ping, then this is probably where the problem lies. Make sure all your clients are all on the same subnet with the correct tcp/ip information.

Let me know if this helps...

Re: Can't add clients to domain ?Help please

      HI Mate,

First of all I would like to thank for your great help, however, I've tried to ping I got Unreachable Destination. Also, I'm having only one P.C with XP Pro I've it's in the same subnet same gateway address and Static IP.

Now, I removed the Domain Controller and Restart doing it by the wizard to see where is my mistake. When I try to ping to the server now I got reply.

      Any help or advice ?

      Thanx

        Hi once again,

I've removed the Domain Controller and the Active Directory and trying reinstalling it again,. But while I'm doing the configurations I seen that
        Code:

Configure this server as the first domain controller in a new forest of domain trees.

The new domain name is habibalby.com. This is also the name of the new forest.

The NetBIOS name of the domain is HABIBALBY0

        Database folder: C:\WINDOWS\NTDS
        Log file folder: C:\WINDOWS\NTDS
        SYSVOL folder: C:\WINDOWS\SYSVOL

The DNS service will be installed and configured on this computer. This computer will be configured to use this DNS server as its preferred DNS server.

The password of the new domain administrator will be the same as the password of the administrator of this computer.
The netBions name which I have choosen is habibalby.com, it has been selected Habibalby0 due to a confilcts in the names.

It means I'm doing a Forest Domain not a new domain.

Any help to reconfigure a New doamin ??

        Thanks,

        habibalby

(I hate that damn wizard that tricks novice computer workers into thinking it's doing the job right, while it usualy just makes one big mess...)

You should make sure that the DNS service is indeed installed on the server. Then check to see if there is a forward lookup zone with the EXACT name of your AD domain. Next, see if it's configured to allow dynamic updates. After that, check to see if there are 4 folders inside that zone that start with "_". If so, you should now check to see if the client computer has been configured to use the server's IP as it's DNS server.

If something here doesn't look right, come back and tell us what's not as I said it should be.

Re: Can't add clients to domain ?Help please

                HI Petri ,

Yes, I have tried what you have told me, the DNS is Installed and in the Forward Lookup Zones HABIBALBY.COM. Also, the Dynamics Updates set to receive NonSecure and Secure. Forwarders DNS ISP IP Address. 193.188.97.207 and 217.17.233.49. Inside the Habibalby.COM Zone are, _msdcs, _sites, _tcp, _udp, DomainDNSZones and ForestDNSZones.

I've configured the Cleint IP Address as follows:
                IP: 192.168.1.3
                Subnet: 24 Bits
Default Gateway it's the Server IP Address: 192.168.1.10

                DNS: 192.168.1.10

                Any help ?

Re: Can't add clients to domain ?Help please

So the client is configured to use the internal DNS, yes?

Why not try an NSLOOKUP from the client and see if it can resolve names from the DNS, start with a GC lookup.

Next, run NETDIAG, tell us what errors it finds.
                  Cheers,

when you try to join the domainwhat are you typing.

i usually use the netbios name so in your case it would be HABIBALBY0

Also, i have noticed that when I restart the server in the Unlock Computer Screen I Type the Administrator Name, Password and in the Logon to: I see HABIBALBY0. So, it means what I'm doing is wrong or what ?

I tried to use the HABIBALBY0 as a Domain Name, but also same error I got.

DNS isn't working properly by the looks of it.

AD relies heavily on DNS to operate. If it don't work then AD won't work.

                        Try this

                        Setup DNS in Windows 2000
