  • DC 100% CPU Utilization

    Hi Guys,

One of my domain controller is utilizing 100% CPU all the time, I can't figure it out which exe or process is consuming all the CPU, is there a way I can figure it out and solve the problem.

    Thanks
    Sami

    Re: DC 100% CPU Utilization

I presume you've looked in task manager, including the "show processes from all users" option?

What OS is this DC running?
    What are the HW specs?

      Re: DC 100% CPU Utilization

      Thanks Mate,

Its a virtual server, its running in calm state since last 3 years for 300 users, we do have redundant DC's also (including physical server), but this is a main server.

CPU utilization issue is started since last month , in task manager I can't find any thing specific, could you please advise where can I find show process.

Any utility I can use to see which process is consuming the bandwidth?

      Regards
      Sami.

        Re: DC 100% CPU Utilization

If the CPU is using 100% you should review the task manager again.
Maybe you can post a screenshot, but make sure you sorted it correctly.

Also please check the physical VM server cpu resources.
This might be the root cause.

            Thanks for your reply guys,

Physical host is absloutely fined I double checked.

I am attaching a screen shot please chek. Only thing I found so far is taskmanager.exe is consuming 70 of the process. What is this about and advise to resolve this please.

              Re: DC 100% CPU Utilization

Task manager is the application you are running
Disable bginfo -- its a "nice to have"
Repost sorted on CPU use so we can see the other 22%

Use Perfmon to log usage over a period without the distorting effects of running task manager

                  Try using process explorer.
Somehow the task manager seems using 100%.

I did use process explorer, same results, can't see/find any thing.

                      Re: DC 100% CPU Utilization

Add more Columns that may assist with the diagnostic and SORT them in most used order.
You've tried Process Explorer, now try Process Monitor. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb896645.aspx
                      Updated Sysinternals Suite http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb842062.aspx

Something (obviously) is hogging the CPU and the above set of tools are some of the best to find the culprit. Maybe the Server has been compromised so looking for hidden folders running bad stuff may be a good idea.

One option you could look at since this is a Virtual DC, create a new DC and blow away the troublesome child.
                      1 1 was a racehorse.
                      2 2 was 1 2.
                      1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
                      2 2 1 1 2

                        Re: DC 100% CPU Utilization

If you can't find any process giving issues in the Windows Environment, then please check the CPU ready time within VMware.

Edit: I assume you are using VMware of course

                          Thanks for your reply Mates!

Dumber: Its a MS virtual PC and I cheked the config for VM and in there its showing CPU used 39%, very rarely it shows 100%, but in Windows its always 100%.

Biggle77: I am using Process Monitor now, but not sure what I am doing with this, however I am attaching a screenshot for process summary, could you please have a look and see any thing supecious.

Your advise will be highly appreciated.
